When I was 18 years of age, I had someone tell me that I would be another Canadian Statistic because I was a young black woman, who lived in a single parent household. Fortunately for me, I was prepared for such moments. I was blessed to have had strong independent and resilient women in my life, such as my mom, who taught me to never let another person’s perception of me define who I am and what I could be. I also had three brothers that believed in me and encouraged me to be the best that I...

He encouraged all four of his children to follow their dreams. I joined Ottawa Police in 2009, my brother Adam in 2011 and my sister Mallory in 2019. He was right, it’s an incredible...

As a Police Communicator at Ottawa Police Service (OPS), I am often the first person someone speaks to when they call for help. I never know who the next caller will be - a loved one asking for a wellness check on someone they can’t reach, a frantic call about a robbery in progress or maybe a collision with injuries, in which case I will dispatch fire and paramedics along with police. One evening after work I was driving home in the middle of the night. I passed a man stumbling on the side of...
