I worked for the Kanesatake Mohawk Police, a First Nation community in Quebec where I grew up. When my husband was transferred, I decided to try something new in a related field where my experience would be helpful. Having seen the other side of police calls enables me to understand why the officers are doing what they are and to stay calm. As a dispatcher you have to multi-task. You learn all the policies and procedures, but how do you fill the silence while you wait on the line with the caller until emergency responders arrive? What if I say the wrong thing? Now I’m more comfortable with these calls. Usually, it’s a friend or family member making the call. I tell them, you made the right choice, calling for help....
