The Auxiliary Police Program is a volunteer program intended to enhance community-based policing by allowing citizens to participate and volunteer with police.
Auxiliary police volunteers provide a complementary service to sworn police officers by assisting officers while under police supervision.

Auxiliary police members receive orientation and training, enabling them to fulfill their volunteer duties. Auxiliary police members:

Under the direction of a sworn police officer, Auxiliary Police may perform any of the following duties or programs: Crime prevention programs;

Note All applicants of the Ottawa Police Service Auxiliary program must sign an Authorization of Release of Information waiver permitting background and reference checks to confirm all information supplied. In addition, all applicants must undergo a physical examination to determine their health status. Failure to comply with either disqualifies the individual from the selection process. |

Realities of Service
Before making up your mind to become an Auxiliary volunteer, it would be wise to consider what you are getting into.
Is the Auxiliary Police Program really for you?
Some of your personal autonomy will be curbed while you are a member of the Auxiliary Police Program. While on duty, you are required (among other things) to:
- Obey lawful orders implicitly.
- Dress and behave as a member of a disciplined, paramilitary organization.
- Conform to regulations regarding personal deportment.
- Fulfill a minimum two-year commitment.
