13 Officers recognized at October 18 Badge Ceremony
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Monday, October 17, 2022 3:50 pm
(Ottawa) — The Ottawa Police Service, along with members of the Ottawa Police Services Board, other dignitaries and family and friends, will have a formal Badge Ceremony tomorrow.
A total of 13 Police Constables will be presented with their wallet badge from the Interim Chief of Police, Steve Bell. Fifty percent of the class identifies as racialized, with 31% identifying as women.
The Badge Ceremony and March Past will begin at 1 p.m. at Tudor Hall located at 3750 North Bowesville Road. Members of the media are welcome.
The officers will complete a formal inspection, oath of office and, after formally receiving their badges from Interim Chief Steve Bell, they will conclude with a March Past. Photographs with family and friends will be available after the Ceremony.
The group is highly educated with university and/or college degrees and they bring a wealth of experience ranging from previous careers or volunteering in social work. They have made the decision to become Sworn Police Officers with the Ottawa Police Service. Many speak English and French, and other languages spoken include Luo, Somali, Punjabi, Tamil and Vietnamese as well as American Sign Language.
All have deep ties to the City as well as the community, as they grew up or were raised in Ottawa.
The standards for becoming a police officer are the most stringent they have ever been. The Ottawa Police Service has continuously worked to remove unfair and unnecessary barriers that have previously kept excellent potential police applicants from all communities from successfully completing our hiring processes.
These newest officers have passed their provincial training at the Ontario Police College. They will be in patrol cars throughout the city starting Oct 24 with their field training officer.
