29 police recruits welcomed at Badge Ceremony
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Wednesday, November 20, 2024 3:55 pm
(Ottawa) — The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) hosted a Badge Ceremony today to formally recognize 29 recruits hired in November 2024. The class was welcomed by Chief Eric Stubbs and Ottawa Police Services Board Chair Salim Fakirani.
The ceremony is an important part of recognizing the role of policing in the community and celebrating the individual successes of each officer. The recruits bring with them diverse backgrounds and skills that will enrich the OPS and strengthen its connection to the communities it serves.
The recruit class comes with a wealth of experience from their previous careers. These include members of Ottawa By-Law and Regulatory Services, OC Transpo, Ottawa Paramedic Service, and Clarence-Rockland Fire Services. Some have served with the Canadian Armed Forces, Canadian Border Services Agency, Parliamentary Protective Service, the RCMP, and the Governor General's Foot Guards, while others bring expertise from industries such as medicine, banking and culinary arts.
Several recruits have volunteered with organizations that support our community's most fundamental needs, including The Ottawa Mission, the Boys and Girls Club, and the Ottawa Food Bank.
Of the 26 men and 3 women receiving their badges today, many have advanced educational backgrounds in criminology, commerce, architecture, psychology, and health sciences. While some recruits were raised in Ottawa and Gatineau, others come from cities across Canada and around the world, including places like Scarborough, Belleville, Markham and Campbellton, New Brunswick, as well as international backgrounds from countries like India, Haiti, Venezuela, New Zealand, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United States and the United Kingdom.
In addition to English and French, this recruit class speaks 7 other languages, including Arabic, Hindi, Urdu, Spanish, Bangla, Creole and Portuguese. This linguistic diversity will help the OPS better serve its growing and multicultural population.
