Arrest related to November 18 demonstration
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Sunday, November 24, 2024, 4:35 pm
(Ottawa) – Earlier this week, officers attended a pro-Palestinian demonstration in the downtown core where protesters were advised by Ottawa Police Service officers that they could not take over streets while demonstrating.
After observing criminal behaviour, four individuals were arrested that evening. Police identified others in the crowd committing offences but deemed that it would not be safe to make arrests at the time and risk an escalation.
These activities included obstructing police, mischief, directing others to commit offences and repeated noise offences.
Earlier today, a 29-year-old woman was arrested in relation to the activity on November 18.
She has been charged with public mischief X2, obstruction of police, counsel an uncommitted indictable offence of mischief and unlawful assembly.
She will appear in court tomorrow.
We recognize the concerns raised by members of the community regarding these arrests. The OPS is committed to ensuring community safety and respecting the lawful right to protest. Any charges related to demonstrations are carefully considered with this balance, and we are focused on balancing the need for public safety with fostering trust and understanding.
The OPS continues to liaise with demonstrators. Investigations of criminal behaviour committed during demonstrations will continue post-demonstration.
