Charges laid in Hate-Motivated incident on LRT
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Monday, November 18, 2024 4:30 pm
(Ottawa) – The Ottawa Police Service East Criminal Investigation Section has charged two men in relation to a hate motivated assault on an east bound Light Rail Transit train near Tremblay Station.
On November 16th at approximately 6:40 pm the victim was riding on the train when the two accused approached and engaged in conversation. Unprovoked, the two accused began to assault the victim while uttering hate-filled and derogatory comments in relation to the victim’s race. When the victim did not respond to the comments, one of the accused then assaulted the victim with a weapon.
As the accused men exited the train, they continued to shout hate filled messages for all the passengers to hear.
The victim sustained serious injuries and was transported to hospital.
Phillip HUDSON-BERRY, 35-years-old, of Ottawa has been charged with:
- Aggravated assault
- Assault with a weapon
- Possession of a weapon dangerous to the public
- Uttering threats
- Mischief, obstruction of property
- Causing a disturbance
- Mischief
Dillon GRAHAM-LAURENCE, 30-years-old, of Ottawa has been charged with:
- Assault
- Assault with a weapon
- Mischief, obstruction of property
- Causing a disturbance
- Breach of probation
They both appeared at show cause court on Sunday and were remanded into custody.
We continue to encourage anyone who witnesses or experiences such incidents to report them to police. Reporting hate-motivated incidents is an important step in stopping cycles of hatred.
