Correction: Suspect to identify in hate-motivated graffiti at the War Memorial

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Friday, October 23, 2020   7:33am 

(Ottawa) – The Ottawa Police Service is investigating a hate-motivated graffiti that occurred on Wednesday, October 14^th at the National War Memorial on Wellington Street. 

At approximately 9:46pm, a man riding a bike approached the Memorial, used a sharp object to engrave a hate graffiti on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. He left the area on the bike.

The suspect is described as Caucasian man. He was wearing a light-coloured sweater, dark pants, a dark tuque, a black back pack and was riding a mountain style bike (see photos). 

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Detective Ali Toghrol of the Ottawa Police Hate Crime Investigations Unit at 613-236-1222, ext. 5453.

As part of the ongoing Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) action plan, the Ottawa Police Service (OPS) reintroduced the Hate Crime Section in January 2020 to encourage reporting, improve response and support impacted communities.  Our three-pronged approach to hate crimes includes investigative expertise, community outreach work, and ongoing intelligence gathering. 

The OPS is constantly looking for ways to improve its response to hate-motivated incidents and to ensure community awareness. That includes raising awareness of our approach to hate crime investigations both externally and internally.
