Demonstrations in Ottawa this Sunday
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Friday, February 2, 2024 11:45 am
(Ottawa) — The Ottawa Police Service is preparing for another busy weekend with several planned demonstrations in the downtown core on Sunday, February 4, from approximately 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Commuters may experience temporary road closures and traffic congestion, including Wellington Street, Metcalfe Street, Elgin Street, Laurier Avenue and the ByWard Market.
We continue to work with our municipal and policing partners to ensure public safety.
Residents and businesses will see an increased police presence in the downtown core and surrounding areas.
Remain safe, respectful and lawful.
Ottawa is home to hundreds of peaceful and safe demonstrations each year.
Freedom of expression has reasonable limits to protect citizens, property and businesses from disruptive or unlawful activities.
Threats of violence, property destruction, or other unlawful conduct are not protected under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
The intentional use of loud sound reproduction devices in close proximity, physically interfering with police or by-law officers, obstructing or impeding the flow of traffic on any roadway, and vehicle-based demonstrations are prohibited.
Hate has no place in our city.
Anyone who witnesses or experiences hate-motivated incidents is asked to report them to police by calling the Police Reporting Unit at 613-236-1222, 7300 (or 911 in a life-threatening emergency) online at ottawapolice.ca/report.
Anonymous tips can be submitted by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or at crimestoppers.ca.
Police responsibilities during demonstrations
The Ottawa Police Service respects everyone's right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.
Everyone also has a right to a safe environment.
We will continue to update the community on any new information.
