Enforcement results from Downtown area during Canada Day weekend

(Ottawa) – This past Canada Day was unique, with the return of in-person festivities and a larger footprint. The robust police planning, deployment and response met the challenges presented by this major event and the multiple protests.
The Ottawa Police Service had the necessary resources, including public order units, traffic teams, tow trucks, and Quick Response Teams (QRT) and our enhanced police presence was set into motion on June 29th, lasting until the late hours of July 3rd.
During the 5-day operation, a total of 12 people were arrested, 50 criminal charges laid, and 4 Controlled Drugs and Substances Act charges in the Downtown area. There were no major incidents reported in other areas of the city.
The highlights included:
- June 29, a man causing a disturbance on Parliament Hill. He was arrested and transported back to Toronto on an outstanding warrant.
- June 30, a police operation on the 417 and Anderson Road. This investigation resulted in one person being charged. The charges include breach of a release order and other provincial offences under the Highway Traffic Act.
- June 30, a choking incident at the War Memorial. This investigation resulted in three persons charged. The charges include assaulting police, resisting arrest, causing a disturbance, and assault by choking.
- July 1, an arrest on Canada Day near Booth and Fleet Streets involving RCMP. This investigation resulted in a man being charged with possessing weapons dangerous to the public, and breach of probation.
- July 1, an assault near George and Cumberland Streets. This investigation resulted in two persons charged. The charges include assault with a weapon, possessing weapons dangerous to the public, carrying a concealed weapon, and breach of probation.
- July 2, an arrest in the ByWard Market. This investigation resulted in two persons charged with several firearm and drug offences.
- July 2, a gun seized in Sandy Hill. This investigation resulted in a man being charged with several firearm and drug offences.
- July 3, a woman was arrested for public intoxication near Nicholas and Daly Avenue. The woman assaulted the officer by spitting in his face. The charges include Causing a disturbance and assaulting police.
Other ongoing investigations include painting on public property in both Strathcona Park and Wellington Street.
