Enhanced Integrated Enforcement: Community Safety Traffic Initiative Results from November 13th
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Monday, November 18th, 2024, 3:05 PM
(Ottawa) — On Wednesday, November 13th, 2024, as part of the Ottawa Police Service’s Enhanced Integrated Enforcement approach to community safety, the Carlington Neighbourhood Resource Team (NRT) partnered with the OPS Traffic Unit to address ongoing traffic complaints in the Carlington community.
Officers focused their enforcement efforts on Merivale Road, Kirkwood Avenue, Carling Avenue, and Fisher Avenue, which were identified as high-concern areas based on community complaints and traffic data analysis. These main routes experience heavy traffic volumes and account for the majority of traffic-related complaints in the area.
The enforcement initiative involved five members of the Carlington NRT and five members of the Traffic Unit. The Axon Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) was deployed during the operation to identify unlicensed and suspended drivers.
A total of 64 enforcement actions were taken during the initiative:
- 29 Provincial offence notices issued
- 19 Part 3 Summons issued
- 16 Warnings issued
Offences included:
- Driving While Under Suspension
- Operating a Motor Vehicle – No Licenc[1] e
- Operating a Motor Vehicle – No Insurance
- Plate Not Authorized for Vehicle
- Failing to Apply for Permit on Becoming New Owner
- No ValidPermit
- Failing to Surrender Driver’s Licenc[2] e
- Failing to Surrender Insurance Card
Additionally, a 19-year-old man was charged with stunt driving after being observed traveling at 95 km/h in a 50 km/h zone on Fisher Avenue near Shillington Avenue. His vehicle was impounded, and his licenc[3] e was suspended for 30 days.
Another driver was observed traveling at a high rate of speed on Fisher Avenue. When officers attempted a traffic stop, the driver engaged in dangerous driving. Due to the risk to public safety, officers disengaged, and an investigation into this "Failing to Stop for Police" incident is ongoing.
In total, 64 charges and warnings were issued during this one-day initiative. Carlington NRT and the Traffic Unit plan on conducting these types of collaborative projects going forward to address traffic complaints in the Carlington community.
