Father and son serve a combined total of 67 years with Ottawa Police

Constable Dean Baker received his retirement badge today from Chief Peter Sloly, presented to him by his father, Merv, who retired from the Ottawa Police Service in 1994.

Constable Baker started as a Special Constable and over the course of his career worked in patrol, traffic escort and the courthouse. It was a special moment to have his father present today when he received his retirement badge.

Merv Baker grew up in Ottawa as one of four kids living in LeBreton Flats on Ottawa Street. When he joined the Ottawa Police in 1957 at the age of 20, he was the first member of his family to serve as an officer, although one brother joined the army.

Merv remembers things looking very different in Ottawa back then. The car of choice for police was a Chevrolet model at that time.

He was assigned to several divisions during his thirty-odd years of service and was very proud when his son, Dean, joined in 1989.

Merv retired in 1994 and now all these years later, Dean has completed his career at OPS too.

Just as they enjoyed serving together, they can now enjoy retirement together too!
