Arrests made in Booth Street Homicide
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Wednesday, August 9, 2023 2:10 pm
(Ottawa) – The Ottawa Police Service Homicide Unit has arrested two youths in connection with the July 19th Booth Street fire, which resulted in the death of 17-year-old Hussein Hamam.
The two youths, who cannot be named as per the Youth Criminal Justice Act, are each charged with the following:
- Manslaughter
- Arson causing bodily harm
- Possession of incendiary material
They are scheduled to appear in court today.
The Homicide Unit wishes to thank the public for its assistance in this investigation. Homicide investigations are often complex and challenging, and the assistance of the community is necessary.

Help identify gas can purchase connected to Booth Street Homicide investigation
(Ottawa) – The Ottawa Police Service Homicide Unit is appealing to the public and the business community for assistance in identifying any transactions where a person(s) purchased two gas cans (as pictured) or was seen filling two cans on or before Wednesday, July 19.
Police believe the gas cans were used in the July 19th fire on Booth Street where Hussein Hamam was located deceased.

Homicide and Arson Units seek assistance in a suspicious fire investigation on Booth Street
(Ottawa) – The Ottawa Police Service Homicide and Arson Units are seeking the public’s help for information pertaining to a suspicious fire investigation where one person was located deceased.
Just after midnight on Wednesday, July 19, Frontline Officers responded to a working fire in the 300 block of Booth Street.
Once the fire was extinguished, a deceased person was located in the property, which experienced extensive property damage.
The Homicide Unit is leading the investigation with support from the Arson Unit.
