Investigations into recent School threats: Six students identified
(Ottawa) – In the past few weeks, the Ottawa Police Service (OPS) has been working with several schools and local boards after threats to some local high schools were received.
Police immediately assess and respond to each threat with appropriate resources, determine if the threat is credible and take necessary actions. This can include investigative actions and the deployment of police resources to affected schools.
We have identified some of the sources of the threats and, in those cases, appropriate investigative actions have been taken to deal with the individuals responsible and address any threats. In other cases, though no credible threat had been identified, we have increased police presence.
To this date, a total of six students, between 12 and 16 year old, who authored and/or posted a threat towards students and teachers at their school in the West end were dealt with by police. The approach by police, in coordination with the respective school boards, has involved alternative measures such as diversion programs or being spoken to (warning) to ensure that the youths involved understand the seriousness of the situation.
The OPS continues to work with the respective school boards to assess the level of risk to any school population and the community at large.
We are focused on ensuring a safe school environment and take this matter seriously. We have and will continue to work with the school boards to ensure communications with parents, guardians and the student population.
We ask Ottawa residents, parents and guardians, teachers and students to report suspicious activity/threats to a local school, including those seen in social media posts, by calling 613-236-1222.
