Joint Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Initiative
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Tuesday, November 26, 2024 11:20 am
(Ottawa) — On Friday, November 15th, 2024, the Ottawa Police Service partnered with the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) and Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) to conduct a last-minute commercial vehicle enforcement blitz at the Fred Barrett Arena in Ottawa’s east end.
The initiative focused on commercial vehicle safety compliance, with inspectors and officers from MTO, OPP, and OPS conducting a total of 37 inspections. The enforcement effort resulted in 11 vehicles being placed out of service, 30 charges being laid, and one plate seized for an unsafe vehicle.
Vehicles were removed from service for issues such as improper or suspended driver’s licences, exposed bearings, insecure loads, overloaded or improper tires, non-compliance with driver’s licence conditions, improper brakes, and faulty coupling devices. Charges included violations for improper driver’s licences, no directional signals, failure to conduct daily trip inspections, expired annual inspections, failure to wear seat belts, overweight vehicles, and other infractions such as CVOR violations and non-compliance with licence conditions.
In 2024, the Ottawa Police Service participated in seven joint traffic safety projects with MTO and OPP, focusing on the enforcement of commercial motor vehicles. On average, 35-45% of vehicles inspected during these initiatives were removed from the road for safety concerns. These collaborative efforts have significantly contributed to improving road safety and addressing the risks associated with unsafe heavy vehicles. This initiative highlights the continued dedication of enforcement agencies to maintaining safe roadways by identifying and addressing unsafe commercial vehicles.
