Melanie, Police Communicator acting supervisor
I worked for the Kanesatake Mohawk Police, a First Nation community in Quebec where I grew up. When my husband was transferred, I decided to try something new in a related field where my experience would be helpful. Having seen the other side of police calls enables me to understand why the officers are doing what they are and to stay calm. As a dispatcher you have to multi-task. You’re engaging with the caller, providing information to the officers, getting other resources needed and looking for information about the people involved or the location - anything that can be helpful. The comradery of the people who work in the Communications Centre is exemplary. When there’s a big call, everyone pulls together. Sometimes I don’t know how I got through it, but I do, with personal strength, good leadership and amazing team mates.
We’re recruiting!
