Officer Assaulted, Bystanders Assist

(Ottawa)— One man has been charged after a patrol officer was randomly assaulted early Thursday morning in the Montreal Rd. area.

The officer was parked in the area of Montreal Rd. and Lafontaine Ave. at approximately 12:45 am when a man jumped into the officer’s cruiser through the passenger window. The officer was able to exit the cruiser, but a struggle ensued into the street.

The officer needed immediate assistance and called for backup, but before other officers arrived, two bystanders in the area came to help and the man was safely handcuffed.

One man is facing several charges including assault police and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.
