Ottawa Police encourages residents to visit Crime Stoppers information booths during Crime Stoppers Month

(Ottawa)— Crime Stoppers Ottawa and the Ottawa Police Service are pleased to host opportunities throughout Crime Stoppers month for residents to learn more about the Crime Stoppers program and how it helps our community.
Numerous venues and information booths will be set up throughout Ottawa during the entire month of January.
“It’s an opportunity for residents to ask questions and learn more about the program,” said Richard McMullen, Chair of Ottawa Crime Stoppers. “A lot of people don’t know how they can provide a tip, what happens to a tip once it is received or how Crime Stoppers benefits the community.”
Crime Stoppers continues to have an impact on solving crime. A 2014 and 2015 comparison shows an increase in criminal charges, recovered property, narcotics seizures and recovered firearms.

“Crime Stoppers is a valuable tool for solving crime in our community,” said Crime Stoppers program coordinator Sergeant Art Wong. “It’s a way for people to anonymously help police solve crimes, identify suspects and get guns off our streets.”
The Crime Stoppers program guarantees the anonymity of the tipster. Crime Stoppers does not subscribe to call display, does not record calls and does not require tip providers to testify in court. If the information provided leads to an arrest, it could result in a cash reward of up to $2000.

“Most people want to do the right thing and help solve a crime. The fact that they can do so anonymously and maybe receive a reward is what makes this program so successful,” said Sgt. Wong.
The Crime Stoppers information booth can be found at the following locations:
- Jan 7 between 10am-2pm at Civic Hospital
- Jan 12 between 10am-2pm at Billings Bridge Plaza
- Jan 14 between 10am-2pm at Rideau Centre
- Jan 18 between 10am-2pm at Bayshore Shopping Centre
- Jan 19 between 10am-2pm at Carleton University
- Jan 21 between 10am-2pm at Algonquin College
- Jan 23 between 10am- 3pm at Wal-Mart Superstore Innes Rd
