Ottawa Police launches the 2019 Thomas G. Flanagan S.C. Scholarship Award
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Thursday, October 18, 2018 2:05pm
(Ottawa)—In recognition of Persons Day on October 18, the Ottawa Police Service (OPS) is pleased to announce that it is now accepting applications for the 2019 Thomas G. Flanagan S.C. Scholarship Award.
The $1,500 scholarship was established in 1993 in honour of the late Thomas G. Flanagan, who served as chief of police of the OPS between 1989 and 1993. It is presented annually to a woman from a racialized or indigenous community who is interested in pursuing a career in policing, following a period of post-secondary study.
“I am grateful for the financial assistance towards my aspirations to become a police officer,” said Nesreen Hammoud, the 2018 recipient of the Scholarship Award.
Applications are available online at ottawapolice.ca/students and can be submitted by email to info@ottawapolice.ca, or by mail to: Ottawa Police Service, Diversity and Race Relations, P.O. Box 9634, Station T, Ottawa, Ontario, K1G 6H5. The deadline for applications is the end of February 2019.
Persons Day marks the day women were formally identified as “persons” under the law by the British Privy Council in 1929. Under that new law, women were given the right to be appointed to the Senate, which paved the way for women to campaign for other public office seats.
