Ottawa Police Service launches Operation Interlude for 2023
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Friday, March 17, 2023 10 a.m.
(Ottawa) – The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) will launch Operation Interlude on Monday, March 20 to coincide with many students’ return to class, following March Break.
This education campaign aims at coordinating enforcement measures by frontline patrol and Traffic Services officers in targeted areas in the city surrounding school zones.
“We will be focusing on motorists failing to reduce speeds in these areas or failing to stop for school buses,” said OPS Traffic Case Manager Sergeant Craig Roberts. “This includes failing to respect the safety and direction of school crossing guards across the city.”
Drivers caught going over speed limits, not stopping for school buses, or endangering road users will be ticketed, or if charged with stunt driving will also have their vehicle towed.
“We are counting on everyone to do their part to keep our children safe,” said Sgt. Roberts. “Parents shouldn’t have to worry about their kids’ safety during their commute to and from school every day.”
Road safety for all users is a priority not only for the city’s residents, but for the OPS as well. Ongoing education initiatives with partners have helped to share information on road safety.
“We continue to work closely with Safer Roads Ottawa – aligning our education and enforcement efforts with the city’s investment in road safety technology,” said Sgt. Roberts. “It’s a win-win for all involved, and most importantly, for community members of all ages throughout the city.”
Drivers are asked to:
- Reduce speed in and around school zones.
- Always stop for school buses while stopped with lights flashing and stop-arm extended.
- Be aware of all pedestrians and expect the unexpected while in proximity to a stopped school bus or pedestrian crossing.
- Respect the direction of school crossing guards – they’re an important part of our children’s safe commute to and from school every day.
Drivers are responsible for stopping in both directions for stopped school buses; failing to do so can result in fines ranging from $400 to $2,000 with six demerit points.
