Ottawa resident helps patrol officers nab car thief
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Thursday, December 7, 2023 3:40 pm
(Ottawa) – Two weeks ago, the Ottawa Police Service issued an advisory regarding the ongoing vehicle thefts occurring in our city. Over 1200 vehicles have been stolen this year, and over 40 just last week.
Last week, an Orleans resident reviewed their home security footage and noticed a suspicious person walk up to their vehicle and take pictures of it, some up close including the vehicle’s VIN (Vehicle Identification Number).
The resident was concerned, as this incident happened during the night, and his vehicle is one that is sought after for car thefts. He thought “My truck is now on someone’s Christmas shopping list and it’s not a great feeling.”
The following evening, the resident decided to monitor his security cameras. Around 3:30 am, he noticed a vehicle drive by. It seemed to be the same vehicle as the one that had taken off the previous night. He called 911.
Our dispatchers immediately sent officers to his address. They patrolled the area, but the suspicious vehicle was gone. The officers discussed the situation with the resident and continued their patrols.
Less than 10 minutes later, the vehicle returned, and the resident called 911 immediately.
While officers were on their way, the resident continued giving specific details to the dispatcher to share with the officers. This specific information helped officers know how many suspects they were looking for, what they were wearing, and in which direction he last saw them.
As officers arrived in the area, they immediately closed it off, and the K9 Unit began seeking the suspects. “A minute later, the K9 unit appeared. The entire neighbourhood was lit up with red & blue, it felt great... we did this together!”
Officers located the suspect vehicle and arrested the driver. Two other suspects fled the area.
The East Criminal Investigations Unit charged the 22-year-old driver from Charlemagne, QC with Attempted theft over $5000, Conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, and Possession of break-in instruments.
The Ottawa Police Service takes vehicle theft incidents seriously. We continue to encourage residents to call 911 if they see suspicious vehicles and incidents.
Reminder:
- Do not engage with the thieves, they may be armed;
- Monitor from a safe distance;
- When calling 911, every detail is important;
- Consider safety measures to protect your vehicle from being stolen
