Register your bike with 529 Garage near Westboro Beach this Saturday
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Wednesday, August 11, 2021 2:42pm
(Ottawa) — The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) will be hosting a registration event for the 529 Garage app on August 14, 2021 near Westboro Beach.
“If you haven’t already received your 529 Garage shield, now is a good time to pick one up,” said Constable Samson Vo, with the Neighbourhood Resource Team. “We are asking people to pre-register their bikes on the app or the website first - this includes taking photos and registering the bike’s serial number, before you come.”
A tent will be set up on the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway at the Westboro Beach entrance, starting at 10:00a.m. until about 2:00p.m. (see map)
This event coincides with the NCC Weekend Bikedays, when the Westbound Parkway is shut down to vehicles to allow cyclists to enjoy a ride along the Rideau River.
Introduced in 2019, in partnership with Bike Ottawa and Safer Roads Ottawa, the 529 Garage app is an easy way for cyclists to register their bicycles to help police locate them faster if they are stolen. The app also creates a network with other Ottawa cyclists to alert riders to missing or stolen bikes.
“We find the app really useful in helping police to reunite bikes with owners after they’ve been stolen,” said Cst. Vo. “If you can’t come out to our event this Saturday, we would encourage you to register on the app or the website, you can still use it without having a 529 shield.”
With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we are asking that all visitors to respect public health guidelines -- wear a mask and practice physical distancing.
