Residents Matter Enforcement Initiative Results: September 19th
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Monday, September 23, 2024 2:10 pm
(Ottawa) — Members of the Ottawa Police Service Traffic Escort & Enforcement Unit and frontline patrol officers were out on Thursday, September 19th, as part of the Residents Matter (#ResidentsMatter) late-night traffic enforcement initiative.
Officers were deployed to the Orleans area. 18 provincial offence notices (PONs) were issued during Thursday’s enforcement. Among the PONs issued, 10 were for speeding, 1 for improper muffler, 1 for disobey sign, 1 for litter on highway, and 5 for document infractions.
Three drivers were issued Court Summons charged with stunt driving by excessive speed.
• 146 km/h in an 90 km/h zone – Highway 174 EB East of Trim Road
• 100 km/h in a 60 km/h zone – Innes Road/ Lamarche Avenue
• 143 km/h in an 80 km/h zone – Highway 174 WB / Tenth Line Road
These stunt drivers had their licences suspended for 30 days, their vehicles seized for 14 days, and have upcoming court dates. As a reminder, when convicted, a stunt driving charge may result in a fine of $2000 - $10000, six demerit points, a possible six months in jail, and a further one-year to three-year licence suspension.
A total of 21 charges were laid (18 PONs and 3 Court Summons) during the enforcement initiative.
"Like our OPP enforcement partners, we are seeing some ridiculous speeds on our roads. These high-risk driving behaviours put everyone's lives at risk, including their own. Despite recent tragedies on the roads, drivers continue to behave like they are invincible...until they're not," says Constable Phil Kane of the Ottawa Police Traffic Escort & Enforcement Unit. "We will continue to target this irresponsible and dangerous behaviour by working together and sharing intelligence."
