Suicide attempt incident a reminder that help is available during COVID-19

Officers who attended a home for a suicide attempt in mid-March decided on their own to check in with the family to see how they were doing. Their kindness both surprised and comforted the family in a time of need.

The mother of the young man was grateful to Ottawa Police Constables Kevin Benloss and Sarah Bell, who she says "went beyond the call of duty".  In particular, she praised Cst. Bell, who was professional throughout the incident, despite poor treatment from the woman’s son. She even took the time to comfort another child in the home.

The officers attended a few days after the incident to be sure the family was getting support during these difficult times.

The woman went on to say it had taken a while to pass along her appreciation because of daily struggles with her son as well as an elderly parent in addition to COVID-19 stresses.

"But it’s important that you know your actions were appreciated and you inspire me in believing in the kindness of strangers."
