Woman impersonates a member of the Human Trafficking Unit and attempts to extort money

(Ottawa) – The Ottawa Police Service is investigating a case involving a woman in the sex trade who impersonated a member of the Human Trafficking Unit and attempted to extort a significant sum of money from an individual seeking to purchase sexual services.

We want to remind the community that the Ottawa Police actively investigates human trafficking and related offenses. However, police will never demand any form of payment from individuals involved in these acts, those reporting them, or those being victimized.

Additionally, it is important to understand that obtaining sexual services for consideration is a crime under section 286.1 of the Criminal Code.

The Ottawa Police Human Trafficking Unit prioritizes the safety, security, and well-being of victims and survivors of human trafficking, regardless of whether they choose to participate in the criminal justice system or seek support to exit. We strive to treat everyone with compassion, dignity, and respect, and we aim to minimize re-traumatization by actively connecting victims and survivors with internal and community supports that best meet their needs and wishes.
