FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Wednesday, October 2, 2024 2:30 pm
(Ottawa) — The Ottawa Police Service's Traffic Escort & Enforcement and K9 Units have laid criminal and provincial charges following the September 19th Residents Matter (#ResidentsMatter) late-night traffic enforcement initiative.
Shortly after 12:00 am on September 20th, as part of the Residents Matter traffic enforcement initiative, an Ottawa Police Traffic Escort & Enforcement officer observed a BMW travelling at 234 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on Highway 174 near Blair Road.
The vehicle was then spotted by an Ottawa Police K9 Unit officer on Highway 417. The officer then attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled into the downtown core.
An investigation by the Traffic & K9 officers was conducted, and on October 1st, a 27-year-old man from Ottawa was arrested and charged with the following:
- Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle (Criminal Code)
- Flight From Police (Criminal Code)
- Stunt Drive – Excessive Speed (Highway Traffic Act)
The charged man was released on an undertaking and is set to appear in provincial court. His licence was seized/suspended for 30 days, and the vehicle was seized until the court date.
That same evening, three drivers were charged with stunt driving offences (as mentioned in the Residents Matter September 19th results news release):
- 146 km/h in a 90 km/h zone – Highway 174 east of Trim Road
- 100 km/h in a 60 km/h zone – Innes Road / Lamarche Avenue
- 143 km/h in an 80 km/h zone – Highway 174 / Tenth Line Road
