Tactical Unit
The Ottawa Police Tactical Unit is a support unit tasked with responding to and resolving high-risk incidents using specialized tactics and resources. The team operates in extreme situations such as hostage takings, armed/barricaded persons and the execution of high-risk warrants.
The Unit also works closely with crisis negotiators focusing on resolving high-risk incidents with no use of force or as little force as possible.
Members are highly trained in a variety of areas, including the use of specialized weapons, high-angle operations, crisis negotiations, explosives-forced entry, less lethal options and sniper tactics.
The Unit also supports a Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosives (CBRNE) program capable of responding to anything from suspicious packages and recovered explosives to bomb threats and terrorist attacks.
To join the Unit, officers must be physically fit, demonstrate good judgement and decision-making in highly stressful situations, be motivated and adaptable and work well in a team environment.
